The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) may conduct an audit at any time if they identify an area of concern that points to a potential compliance risk.

The ATO obtains information from a number of sources, including banks, other government departments, and industry in general. This information is compared with the income and expenditure reported in your tax returns and activity statements. If anomalies are detected, or if your figures don’t match industry benchmarks, then the ATO may review your affairs.
